![]() I still revisit Diablo 1 from time to time for its atmosphere, but a lot of the appeal that game has for me (mechanically) comes right back in Diablo 2 if I just don't play the game A) to maximize efficiency B) to farm up the best gear. Are there any other roguelikes out there that capture the same pressure and atmosphere of the OG? The only other one I've found is the Doom Roguelike. Light radius isn't really an issue anymore though and the expanded environments takes away some of the style of the original where the dungeon is almost a character itself.ĭiablo 3 took a lot of what I didn't like and ramped it up 1,000,000,000%, and tragically Diablo 4 looks like it will be following in those footsteps with only a token new coat of paint to appeal to the "return to darkness". The focus on endgame grinding makes all of normal and nightmare basically irrelevant. Skill trees were good in theory, but in practice you focus on one or two attacks and then dump all your points into it and its synergies. I've been playing Diablo 1 since it came out, and one of the things I mourn in Diablo 2 was the switch to trying to make the game "addicting" with the slot machine aspect of loot drops beyond what you saw in Diablo 1.
